Fête de la Musique: a free artistic and cultural experience to hit SA in June

The Fête de la Musique is a free popular music celebration; an opportunity to communicate and share a very special moment through music. Launched in 1982 in France, the Fête de la Musique has since known a tremendous success and is held in more than hundred countries in Europe and around the world. It will now take place in various SA cities and town as one of the first events of the France - South Africa Seasons 2012 & 2013. Here is the full program:

Johannesburg (Melville) - The 30 of June 2012,from 12:00 to 21:00

The Melville 7th Street Fête de la Musique will take place on the lively 7th street in Melville, Johannesburg. Pedestrianized for the entire day, the street will offer Jo'burgers a unique artistic & cultural experience featuring a giant puppet parade, live music, kids entertainment, street performances, an open mic session, an open-air screening and much more. Artists such as The Brother Moves on, The Mahotella Queens, Nibs Van der Spuy & Davy Sicard (the famous Reunionese singer Davy Sicard meets the legendary South African guitarist Nibs Van der Spuy as part of a residency followed by tour in South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland), The Fantastiques Guys, UJU, Giant Match, Bongeziwe Mabandla will perform their best tunes during the day. Some special projects such as Invisible Cities Pirate Radio and Melville Actor Studio will also be part of the event. Restaurants will get the opportunity to spill out onto the street and create a special menu for the day.

Port-Elizabeth (Richmond Hill Street) - Saturday 23th of June 2012, from 10:00 to 22:00

For the third year in a row, the Alliance française of Port-Elizabeth and its partners presents the Fête de la Musique in PE, aka. The Richmond Hill Street Music Festival - watch the video of last year's concerts here. As in other cities, this musical and cultural festival will be set in an large pedestrianized area and will be completely free of charge. The program features various international and national bands such as Bongeziwe Mabandla, Nibs Van der Spuy & Davy Sicard (the famous Reunionese singer Davy Sicard meets the legendary South African guitarist Nibs Van der Spuy as part of a residency followed by tour in South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland) and a show by France-based brass-band quartet Braka, as part of a collaboration with trumpet player Marcus Wyatt and young jazz musicians from the Cape Town area. Other artists from the Nelson Mandela Bay area will also appear. You can consult the full program on the dedicated website of the event.

Durban (City Hall) - Thursday the 21st of June, from 18:00 to 1:00

The KZN Philharmonic, in association with Alliance française de Durban and the Ethekwini Municipality plan to link up to the international music celebration Fête de la Musique at the Durban City Hall on 21 June 2012.  In addition to linking into this celebration, the evening will also be a pre-launch event for the French-South Africa season - the official opening of the Seasons being set on the 12 July 2012 at the Standard Bank gallery in Johannesburg. The programme includes performances of the Philharmonic orchestra Kwazulu Natal playing French music (Saint-Saëns: Danse Macabre and piano concerto No.2 in G minor ; Dukas: Symphony in C major), a concert by Davy Sicard and Nibs Van Der Spuy (the famous Reunionese singer Davy Sicard meets the legendary South African guitarist Nibs Van der Spuy as part of a residency followed by tour in South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland). Jazz music will follow with Send the Fire – Martin Sigamoney and Band and a French Dj will be the cherry on top of the party from 0:00 to 1:00. Cape Town (Alliance française) - Thursday the 21st of June from 12:00

Alliance of Cape Town is part of the programme of the Fête de la Musique in the city, with the concert of Bongeziwe Mabandla on Thursday 21 June from 20h30 in its premises. More details on Bongeziwe Mabandla here. The concert will have an opening act by The Chillounge Connection. There will be other performances at AF between 12h00 and 14h30 to be announced soon.
