South African cinema at Paris Cinema 2013

South African focus at Paris Cinema International Film Festival

As part of the South  African season in France, the 11th edition of the Paris cinema festival (28 June-9 July 2013) will present a special South African program of films and workshops, including a tribute to William Kentridge, the screening of four South African films as part of the official selection and a French/South African co-production workshop.

Tribute to William Kentridge

Paris Cinema will pay an exceptionnal tribute to the South African artist William Kentridge by screening 13 of his movies, including the series "10 Drawing for Projections" and "Journey to the Moon". "A cine-concert" will be organised on a composition written by Philip Miller, played at piano by the Italian musician Vincenzo Pasquariello. In addition to this tribute, the festival will give "carte blanche" to William Kentridge with the screening of a dozen films selected by him (movies by Georges Méliès, Luis Bunuel and François Truffaut).

Paris Project South African workshop

Organised as part of the Paris Cinema International Film Festival, Paris Project is a development and financing platform for carefully selected worldwide feature projects destined for French and European co-production. In the context of the South African focus organised by the festival, Paris Project will host a 2 day workshop with selected South African film projects seeking for French co-producers.

One of this project will be proposed by the Durban FilmMart as a first step of a long term cooperation agreement recently signed between the market event of the Durban International Film Festival and Paris Project/Paris Cinema. The other projects will be selected by Paris Project by end May. 33 submissions have been received following the call for submissions launched in April.

The workshop program will include coaching sessions, case studies and presentations centred on co-production opportunities between France and South Africa. Participants will also have access to all the events organized within Paris Project including one-on-one pre-scheduled meetings and seminars taught by European leading film industry professionals.

The workshop will be an unique opportunity for South African producers to meet the French industry and pitch their projects. It will also be an ideal occasion to gain better understanding of coproduction and collaboration opportunities with France and Europe.
