The Best of Cannes Critics' Week in JHB & CT

After Durban (DIFF), the Best of Cannes Critics' Week is coming on Johannesburg and Cape Town screens from the 31st of July to the 2nd of August.

Urucu Media, with the support of IFAS, launched a traveling programme of La Semaine de la critique (Critics’ Week) as part of the 2015 DIFF.

Since its inception in 1961, the annual Cannes’ La Semaine de la Critique (Critic’s Week) is dedicated to promote the work of first and second time feature of emerging filmmakers.

The South African edition of Critics’ Week hosts a dynamic selection of 5 critically acclaimed films, including 3 French long features.

The opening film is Hope by French director Boris Lojkine, who was in attendance at DIFF and presented a Masterclass entitled "Genre Bending: From Documentary to Fiction Film" on Sunday 19 July.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hope is a “scrupulously well-researched” recounting of a journey of desperation taken by a Nigerian woman and a Cameroonian man across the Sahara in an attempt to reach Europe. Cine Europa Online

highlighted the “incredible and moving realism that emerges reveals a director whose work should be kept an eye on.”
