French Director to screen film as part of ICORN South Africa Project and a retrospective at the Alliance Française of Cape Town

silence or exile marion stalensThe film "Silence or Exile", from French director Marion Stalens, will be screened on 22 July at 5.30pm at AFDA Observatory Campus as part of a campaign to promote Cape Town's and Stellenbosch's membership of the International Cities of Refuge Network (www.icorn.org) for exiled journalists and writers. It is run by the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism and South African Pen, in conjunction with Stellenbosch University and AFDA.

The film takes an intimate look into the lives of five exiled writers as they have had essentially to start over in their new host countries. Four out of the five writers profiled in the documentary have strong ties to the ICORN network and two of the artists, Philo Ikonya and Mana Neyestani, are current guest writers in Oslo and Paris, respectively. The other writers include Horacio Castellanos Moya (El Salvador/Iowa City), Svetlana Alexievitch (Belarus/Stockholm), and Ma Jian (China/London). She explains: "At a time when the debate on receiving exiles embroils France, and the entire Western world, the film sets the stage for writers to tell us, from the inside, "what it means to be in exile" and how they perceive us, we who receive them."

Following the ICORN South Africa Project, the Alliance Française of Cape Town will host a series of screening of films by Marion Stalens:

• Wednesday 23 July at 19h00: "Reconciliation" (2005), a documentary on South Africa and the aftermath of the Apartheid, in presence of the director;
• Thursday 24 July at 19h "Juliette Binoche: Sketches for a Portrait" (2009), a documentary about her sister, Juliette Binoche, the renowned French access;
• Friday 25 July at 17h: "Africa Dances".
