Jacques Cousteau biopic, THE ODYSSEY set for July release in South Africa

The highly anticipated biographical film based on legendary French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau will be released at cinemas in South Africa on 14 July 2017 by Videovision Entertainment. Directed by Jérôme Salle, this French film stars Lambert Wilson as Cousteau and Audrey Tautou as his wife Simone, while his sons, Philippe and Jean-Michel are portrayed by Pierre Niney and Benjamin Lavernhe respectively.

THE ODYSSEY takes us to the beginning of it all - it is 1943 and the eccentrically ambitious naval officer Jacques Cousteau dreams of adventure. His magnificent new invention of the Aqua-Lung promises to bring him just that. Newly armed with the ability to breathe underwater for long periods of time, Cousteau dedicates his life's work to his obsession with the sea, becoming the first to create underwater films that dazzle audiences worldwide.

Through a dazzling array of global exploration locations, the film takes one on a lyrical journey almost as if one is a member of Cousteau's crew, experiencing the epic highs and excruciating lows of this pioneer's astounding career which changed humanity's relationship with the sea forever. Cousteau acknowledged man's role in destroying the environment when he said, "Man has probably done more damage to Planet Earth during the course of the twentieth century than in all of human history before that."

Commenting on the film, Sanjeev Singh, Director of Acquisition and Distribution of Videovision Entertainment said, "THE ODYSSEY is an astounding piece of cinematic art. Lambert Wilson's portrayal of Cousteau is brilliant under the expert direction of the talented Jérôme Salle who gives the film a richly authentic texture."

THE ODYSSEY will play in Johannesburg at Rosebank Nouveau, Sandton, Hyde Park; Brooklyn Nouveau in Pretoria, Tygervalley, Somerset Mall, NuMetro V&A, V&A Nouveau in Cape Town; and Walmer Park and Gateway in Durban.
