Cape Town International Animation Festival (18-21 Feb 2016)

The French Institute of South Africa is pleased to partner once again with the Cape Town International Animation Festival (CTIAF) from 18 to 21 February 2016.

Curated by Animation SA, the fifth edition of the festival (previously called Kunjanimation) brings South Africans the chance to catch some of the world’s top animated feature films including the best of French animation. Adama,
the first animation feature film entirely designed and produced in Reunion Island and Phamtom Boy are part of this French selection and will be screened at the Labia Theatre.

In addition, the CTIAF will host an exciting range of workshops with global industry leaders including French Animation delegates, providing a rare opportunity to engage with them and learn from their insights.
The French delegation includes Nedy Acet, 3D Animator at Dreamworks, French producers Christine Ponzevera, Arnauld Boulard and Sebastien Onomo as well as producers from Reunion Island - Frédéric Brun-Picard (AKOZ Collective), Emeline Chan Kam Shu (Nawar Production), Laurent Medea (TIKTAK Production) -  and Edy Payet, managing director of Agence Film Réunion.

Synopsis: 12-year-old Adama lives in a remote West African village. Beyond the cliffs lies the World of Wind, where the Nassaras reign. One night his older brother, Samba, disappears.  Defying the village elders, Adama decides to set off in search of him.With the steadfast determination of a child coming of age, he embarks on a quest that takes him over the seas, to the North, to the frontline of the First World War. The year is 1916.

Phantom Boy is the highly anticipated new film from Alain Gagnol and Jean-Loup Felicioli, the Academy Award®-nominated directors of A Cat In Paris. Leo, an 11-year old boy from New York, has a secret. A mysterious illness has transformed him into a phantom boy, able to leave the confines of his body and explore the city as a ghostly apparition. While in the hospital, he befriends Alex, a police officer injured while attempting to capture a nefarious gangster, who has taken control of the city’s power supply, throwing the metropolis into chaos. Now they must form an extraordinary duo, using Leo’s phantom powers and Alex’s detective work to stop the plot and save New York from destruction.

Senior Dreamworks Animator, Nedy Acet, will discuss his 17 year career and journey as an animator.

Christine Ponzevera, Producer

Christine Ponzevera started out at the Paris-based Walt Disney Feature Animation studio working on the films Hercules and Tarzan. From 2000 to 2010 she has been managing the production of several 2D and 3D animation tv series including Mona The Vampire and Zoe Kezako, then worked in the UK as a producer at Aardman Animation and Nexus Productions. Her personal credits include producing Aardman/Cartoon Network TV show Chop Socky Chooks (Gemini Award and BAFTA nomination) and co-producing Oscar nominated short film This Way Up (Nexus Productions/ BBC Films).This film was selected at Sundance and received the audience award at the Ottawa international animation festival.

On this worshop, Christine will discuss her experience as a producer and IP developper. Across different case studies, she will present the different strategies for developing, financing and producing films and TV programs in Europe highlighting the opportunities and challenges of international co-productions.
Then, four projects from Triggerfish Storylab’s shortlist will pitch their projects to the audience. Christine Ponzevera will use these case studies to lead a discussion about developing and pitching animated projects for the international market.

Arnauld Boulard, Producer

Arnauld is a French Animation Producer with over 20 years of experience in Creative Industries. He started in the animation industry as Head of Production on “Despicable Me.” Working closely with the principals at Illumination Entertainment, Arnauld oversaw a team of 200+ artists and the development of the animation pipeline. In addition, Arnauld was directly involved with all “Despicable Me” ancillary properties as Associate Producer, including the 3 short films “Minions Madness” and the “Minions Mayhem” theme park ride at Universal Orlando.

In 2014, he moved to Reunion Island to manage the production of “Adama” animated feature on which he was Associate Producer. Arnauld set up his own company Gao Shan Pictures on the island and he is working there on a couple European animation projects in association with Pipangai Production. Eager to develop the industry in the Indian Ocean region, Arnauld is also currently line producing “Beijing Safari “a Chinese / Indian coproduction.

Sebastien Onomo, Producer
Sébastien Onomo is a young producer working for the French company Les Films d’Ici. Since 2010, he produced more than fifteen long features for cinema and TV. He is currently producing the first 2D animation film - Funan, le peuple nouveau – of director Denis Do from Les Gobelins animation school.

The “Coproducing with Reunion Island" workshop will be an opportunity for animation industry delegates to meet Reunion Island professionals and learn more about co-production financing mechanism with the attending Reunionese producers.
