French Historian Tal Bruttmann will be taking part in a South African tour with the support of the Alliance française network and the French Institute of South Africa to present his talk on 'How a country remembers its past: The Holocaust in France'.
The Vichy regime in France not only implemented its own anti-Jewish policy, excluding and plundering the Jews of France, but also actively collaborated with the Third Reich in the implementation of the 'Final Solution'. Since 1945, for decades, heated debates took place regarding the responsibility of the French State for the Holocaust in France.
Tal Bruttmann is a Holocaust researcher working on the various anti-Jewish policies implemented in France between 1940 and 1944, the perpetrators involved (from the French administrators to the German police and army) and war violence. He has published extensively on these topics and participated in various international Holocaust conferences. Tal's research has a particular focus on Auschwitz and the killing centres. He has organised, with Mémorial de la Shoah, a teacher training programme on that topic, guiding thousands of French teachers in Auschwitz.
