Barbara Lindop received the insignia of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres

On Monday 12 March 2018, Barbara Lindop received the insignia of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres (Knight in the Order of Arts and Letters) by Ambassador of France to South Africa, H.E. Mr Christophe Farnaud

Art consultant Barbara Lindop is best known as artist Gerard Sekoto's greatest international specialist. South African artist Gerard Sekoto (1913-1993) spent 40 years in France in voluntary exile from Apartheid. He was a painter, self-taught pianist, musician and composer. He is widely regarded as one of the most iconic South African artists. Today, an award bears his name: ABSA L'Atelier Gerard Sekoto award. It rewards young visual artists aged 21 to 35 with the opportunity to develop their talents abroad.

'It was not just an act of artistic appreciation and friendship for you to take on this mammoth task of ensuring that Sekoto's work was known to your countrymen and to a wider audience oversees, it was a political act, an act of protest, an act of courage, an act that involved sacrifice on your part too.'

- H.E. Mr Christophe Farnaud

Barbara Lindop, a great friend of Sekoto, has written several books about the painter, organised numerous exhibitions and contributed to his worldwide fame. She runs the Sekoto Foundation and organised the 2013 exhibition entitled Songs for Sekoto 1913-2013 at the Wits Arts Museum in Johannesburg.
Barbara Lindop is also involved in numerous institutional committees such as the Wits Arts Museum and the Johannesburg Art Gallery. She is a great figure in the artistic and cultural world, a great friend of France, a Francophile and francophone.
